Does isabgol help with weight management?
It may help a little, but only when it is used well. Two recent reviews of trials in adults with overweight found that about 10 g of psyllium a day, taken before meals for several months, led to about 2 to 4 kg more weight lost than not taking it (Gibb 2023; Shahinfar 2023). A larger 2020 review of 22 trials found no clear effect on weight overall (Darooghegi Mofrad 2020). So it is not a weight-loss product; at best it is a small help alongside eating less.
Why would a fibre help?
Isabgol husk is mostly soluble fibre. In water it swells into a thick gel that slows how fast food leaves the stomach. In placebo-controlled trials, 6.8 g taken before breakfast and lunch reduced hunger and the desire to eat between meals (Brum 2016). Feeling full for longer is the most likely way it helps.
What else does it do?
The evidence is stronger for other benefits. About 10 g a day lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol by about 13 mg/dL (Jovanovski 2018). Taken before meals, it lowers blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, but not in people whose blood sugar is normal (Gibb 2015).
How should I take it?
- Stir about 5 g (one heaped teaspoon) into a full glass of water and drink it straight away, before a meal.
- Start with one dose a day and build up; wind and bloating are common at first.
- Never take it dry or with too little water: it can swell and block the food pipe, which is rare but serious (Shin 2022).
- Take regular medicines at least 2 hours apart from it, and check with a doctor if you have diabetes or swallowing or bowel problems.
